Picking Up Your Car at Shannon Airport

Shannon sits in County Clare on the west coast, and if you're coming from North America this might be your first footfall in Ireland. The airport has direct transatlantic routes to New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, plus a spread of European connections. Shannon also has US Preclearance, you go through American immigration before you leave Ireland, which means you arrive in the US as a domestic passenger and walk straight out. Handy, that. The airport has proper aviation heritage too: it pioneered the duty-free shopping concept back in 1947, and yes, the duty-free is still going strong.

The terminal is single and manageable, you're out of arrivals and at the car collection point in minutes. Shannon's location on the N19 gives you fast access to Limerick, Ennis, and the roads heading north along the Clare coast towards the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. The Aran Islands ferry runs from Doolin, about an hour and a half from the airport.

Hiring a car at Shannon is essential. The west of Ireland is rural, beautiful, and gloriously underserved by public transport. The Cliffs of Moher, the Burren's lunar limestone landscape, the Aran Islands ferry, the traditional music pubs of Doolin, you need your own wheels to reach them on your own schedule. Many visitors arriving on transatlantic flights find that collecting a car and driving straight to their accommodation is the best way to shake off jet lag. The scenery along even the shortest drive from Shannon will wake you up faster than any coffee.

How Pickup Works

Step through arrivals and find our team member with your name on a sign. We walk you to the car in the adjacent car park, do the paperwork, hand over the keys. Ten minutes tops. If you're arriving on a transatlantic flight, we adjust to your actual arrival time regardless of delays, no stress, no rush.

Routes from Shannon

The N19 east gets you to Limerick in about twenty-five minutes. For the Cliffs of Moher and the Clare coast, head north through Ennis on the N85, the cliffs are roughly seventy-five minutes from the airport. For Galway, the M18 northbound takes about ninety minutes on a good motorway.

Killarney and the Ring of Kerry are south through Limerick on the N21, about two hours. Dublin is east on the M7, three hours. Both are motorway or dual carriageway most of the way.

County Clare roads are generally good, but the coastal routes are narrow and winding, which is part of their appeal. The road from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher is well maintained but busy in summer. The Burren, a karst limestone landscape that genuinely looks like another planet, is threaded with narrow roads best driven slowly. In May and June, the limestone pavement is carpeted with wildflowers that have no business growing in rock. Slow down and look.

Parking Tips

The Cliffs of Moher visitor centre car park charges a fee that includes cliff walk access. Arrive before 10am in summer or you'll be queueing. Galway city centre parking is available but the city gets properly busy in summer, patience required. Ennis has ample parking. In the smaller villages, Doolin, Lahinch, Ballyvaughan, parking is free and easy. The Aran Islands ferry car park at Doolin pier is free.

Airport Facilities

Restaurants, cafes, the original duty-free shop (pioneered here in 1947, remember), currency exchange, and free Wi-Fi. Parking is directly adjacent. US Preclearance means American-bound passengers clear immigration and customs before departure, a serious time-saver at the other end.

Drives We'd Recommend

The classic Shannon route runs north through Ennis to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. From Lahinch (a surfing town with a great beach), the coast road takes you along towering sea cliffs to the visitor centre. The Burren itself is unlike anything else in Ireland, bare limestone pavement stretching to the horizon, punctuated by wildflowers, hazel scrub, and ancient stone forts. The Poulnabrone Dolmen, a Neolithic portal tomb standing alone in this moonscape, is one of the most iconic images in Ireland. Allow a full day for the Cliffs and Burren loop.

For something quieter, drive the Loop Head Peninsula west of Kilkee. It ends at Loop Head Lighthouse with dramatic cliff scenery, charming villages, and about one percent of the Cliffs of Moher's visitor numbers. The round trip from Shannon takes about three hours with stops, and the stops are the whole point. From Shannon,Cork is 90 minutes southvia the M20.

Why Shannon Is the West Coast's Best Starting Point

Shannon puts Ireland's most dramatic scenery within arm's reach. The Cliffs of Moher in just over an hour. The Burren even closer. The Aran Islands ferry from Doolin. Galway ninety minutes north for the best pub culture in Ireland. For North American visitors, the direct transatlantic flights and US Preclearance make Shannon absurdly convenient. Collect a car, point it north towards the coast, and within an hour you'll be standing at the edge of Europe watching the Atlantic crash into 200-metre cliffs. Not a bad way to start a holiday.

We meet you at arrivals with the car ready. An hour later you could be at the Cliffs of Moher. We include a road map and are always up for a chat about routes, overnight stops, and where to find the best trad music session in Doolin.
